Why This Thirst?
Man has no idea how wonderfully he was created. He is the only one in God’s creation that needs God to be his satisfaction. Consequently man has an unquenchable thirst within him that only God can quench.
Condition of man, thirsty!
From the beginning of the creation of man, man has tried to satisfy this thirst, but the more he tried the thirstier he got. Someone once told me that the soft drink industry knows that the products they sell don’t quench your thirst but actually their products make you thirster. So the more you drink the thirstier you become. This seems to happen to man as he endeavors to satisfy his internal thirst. The more things man tries the thirstier man becomes. He may join himself to sports or entertainment, but that doesn’t satisfy. He may try education, charities or religion but still that is not enough. This is because nothing in the physical or the psychological realm can satisfy this thirst.
The Bible gives us an example of a person who has joined herself to a lot of things that should have been her satisfaction. In John 4:14, Jesus tells a woman at a well that she will never be satisfied drinking this water,
the water of worldly enjoyment, security, self attainment or entertainment. Then out of the blue Jesus asked her a question concerning her husband. “Where is your husband?” The husband is the thing she had joined herself to, the thing that was supposed to satisfy her, the thing that was supposed to match her desire. Where is this one? The woman answered, “I have no husband.” We all have had many things we have joined ourselves to, things that we thought would bring us satisfaction, but which of these things actually became that satisfaction? If we are honest we would have to say, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, "You are right when you say you have no husband. The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband." (John 4:17-18) The things that you’re joining yourself to now won’t be your husband, they won’t satisfy you either. Five tries to quench this thirst with five failures! Man has no idea of his thirst, but Jesus knows. We may have many reasons why we have had so many husbands but Jesus knows the real reason. It’s like the Lord is saying, "I see thirsty people, and they don’t even know they are thirsty."
Cause of man’s thirst!
Why this thirst? God has placed something innate in man that declares there is a God! Eccl. 3:11 Says that “God has put eternity into man's heart.” And Acts 17:27 says "we have been made to search for God—to "grope for Him." God who made man in His own image has also put a desire in him for eternity. God wants to give us what we desire. John 4:14 says, “But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into eternal life.” This is the one thing man needs to quench his thirst. Even when we think we are satisfied, as in John 7:37-38 “In the last day, that great [day] of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.“ Jesus is well aware that man can never be satisfied by anything temporal. But He has the sure thing and guarantees “He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his innermost being shall flow rivers of living water.”
Cure for man’s thirst!
How can we come to Him and drink? Rom 10:8 says “The word is nigh thee, [even] in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach.” Open your mouth and come to Him calling, "Lord Jesus," and drink Him by believing in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, and then you will be saved from this unquenchable thirst. Will you take this first step?
"Lord Jesus, you are the one with the water that can satisfy this desire in me. Thank you, Lord Jesus I can open my mouth and confess that Jesus is Lord. Thank you, for putting the believing ability within my heart that I can drink the water that you give. I drink it right now. Come in Lord Jesus and quench my thirst. Amen."
